Montessori Infant Care Program | Mission Montessori
Our Mission Montessori Infant Program offers a gentle beginning where your baby is not only seen, but truly known, understood, and cared for with the same tenderness you provide at home. Rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori's wisdom that "the greatest development is achieved during the first years of life," our Montessori infant program in San Francisco embraces the extraordinary way a child's brain develops in these early years of life and how much more learning unfolds during this precious time than any other period. In our warm, thoughtfully prepared learning environment, young children are welcomed by Montessori-trained guides who slow down, notice the tiny cues, follow daily observations, and respond with compassion so your baby can settle, feel held, and begin to explore with growing self-confidence.

Curriculum Focus
Our Montessori infant curriculum fosters early childhood development through gentle, hands-on materials, movement, and meaningful connection. From the very beginning, your baby is supported as their child's brain develops through sensory experiences, early language exposure, and opportunities for independence that support cognitive development, social skills, and emotional security.
Daily Routine
Each day in our infant Montessori classroom flows with a calm rhythm that we build together with parents. Feeds, naps, cuddles, and play are all guided by your baby's needs and the Montessori approach. Within that rhythm, your little one will be exposed to pictures and books, songs, tummy time, large motor activities, transferring objects, gentle language games, and quiet observation of other children.
Classroom Experience
In our infant school classroom, your little one will be welcomed into a soft, homelike space with low shelves, cozy mats, and materials designed for this age and stage. Our consistent caregivers and Montessori-trained guides offer warm assistance, careful observation, and kind communication throughout the day, helping each child develop early hand-eye coordination, visual discrimination, and self-confidence as they explore and learn at their own pace.
About Our Montessori Infant Care Program
It's so normal to wonder, "Is my baby really ready for school?" and to feel your heart tug a little at the idea of an infant school. These early years are tender and important, and every parent hopes their child will be surrounded by gentleness, understanding, and real connection. At Mission Montessori, we reassure families that our Montessori infant care program isn't about rushing education at all; it's about creating a calm, loving beginning that honors how a child develops in the first years of life. In this peaceful learning environment, we follow the Montessori approach and cherish these formative years from birth, which is a remarkable period when a child's brain develops more rapidly than at any other stage. Here, your child's natural passion for exploring, connecting, and discovering is nurtured with patient guidance, warm smiles, and steady reassurance. Every day, your baby will be held in a space where they are safe to grow at their own pace, supported by people who care deeply about their comfort, their joy, and their early steps into the world.
From 12 Weeks to 18 Months: Supporting Very Young Children at Every Stage
In the first year of life, young children change so quickly that it can feel like you're meeting a new baby every few weeks. At Mission Montessori, our Infant Program gently wraps around each stage of development, from early head lifting to crawling, pulling up, and walking, with warmth, patience, and thoughtful guidance. In our infant school classroom, families find a comforting beginning where their baby is supported by steady routines, consistent caregivers, and a Montessori-trained guiding team who understand that every child's growth unfolds in its own beautiful time. We honor these tender moments with care, attention and love.
Sensory Development
In our Montessori infant care program, we hold deep respect for the way a child's brain develops through the senses during early childhood. Your baby is invited to experience soft fabrics, gentle sounds, natural materials, and simple visual contrasts that nurture visual discrimination and early cognitive development. These experiences are intentionally calm, small, meaningful touches that help children learn to recognize patterns, feel safe in their surroundings, and slowly build the quiet focus that will guide them throughout life.
Freedom of Movement
In the early years, infants need space to move freely, stretch confidently, and try new things in their own time. In our infant Montessori classroom, your little one can practice tummy time, rolling, scooting, pulling up, and eventually walking with the help of low bars and other tools designed just for them. These skills provide the foundation for large-motor activities such as running, throwing a ball, and skipping. By allowing freedom of movement, we help your little one develop strength, balance, and coordination, gently and without pressure.
Fine Motor Development
Our Montessori-trained guides offer simple yet purposeful activities like grasping rings, transferring objects between small bowls, and exploring safe, everyday tools made for young children. These experiences strengthen early hand-eye coordination and fine motor control while feeding a child's natural passion for doing the "real work" they see around them. These tiny efforts become the quiet beginnings of writing, self-care, and the ability to focus with intention as they grow into later programs.
Early Language Foundations
In our infant school learning environment, early language development is woven into every moment of the day. Your baby hears the warm narration of routines, softly sung songs just for them, slow storytelling, and gentle one-on-one conversations that make them feel truly known. As children learn to match words to sensations and experiences, their cognitive development and social skills grow naturally, because they're not simply listening to language, they are held lovingly within it.
Practical Life Skills and Early Independence
Even in the first year, infants are capable of participating in sweet, simple routines that nurture independence. In our Montessori infant care program, your baby may guide their arms into a sleeve, help hold a cloth while we tidy a tiny spill, or sit at a low table as we begin introducing solids with care and respect. These small practical life moments foster intrinsic motivation and create a quiet pride of belonging. Your child begins to feel that they are part of real life, not just watching it happen.
Emotional Security & Social Development
For young children, emotional safety is the foundation on which all other learning rests. Our consistent caregivers and Montessori-trained guides build this foundation through soft voices, predictable routines, and warm, responsive assistance. Babies learn quickly that someone is always there to comfort and understand them. In this nurturing space, your little one watches other children, exchanges early smiles, and participates in gentle group moments that naturally support social skills and connection without ever pushing interaction before they are ready.
Cognitive Development & Problem-Solving
In our Montessori infant program, babies explore cause and effect with simple puzzles, small containers, and activities like the object permanence box, which helps them understand that objects continue to exist even when they disappear from sight. As your child develops early object permanence and begins experimenting through observation and touch, they experience deeper learning, greater focus, strengthened memory, and the first layers of problem-solving that will benefit them in every other stage of life and education.
Peaceful Routines & Natural Rhythms
We know parents carry their home rhythms close to their hearts, and we honor this by weaving your routines into our Infant child care approach. Feeding, napping, comforting, and introducing solids all follow your baby's needs and your family's preferences as much as possible. Throughout the day, soft music, gentle transitions, and attentive observation create a sense of predictability that helps infants relax, trust, and feel at home in their environment.
Exploration Through Safe, Prepared Environments
Our infant Montessori classroom is arranged as a safe, nurturing learning environment that invites exploration without overwhelming the senses. Low shelves, safe mirrors, baskets of curated materials, and cozy mats allow children to reach, explore, and move freely. Every detail is intentional, from small pitchers used when introducing solids to the object permanence box and other tools that strengthen independence, cognitive development, social skills, and intrinsic motivation during these formative years.

Very clean, organized and professional. My daughter has the very best at this school without a doubt. I love the structure. It’s design makes my daughter yearn to learn more and more each day. She is so proud of her accomplishments at her new school even though she’s only been there a few days. I already am noticing a difference at home and in her behavior in general. As a single mother this has already helped me immensely. I am excited to see her growth this year. We couldn’t have found a better school.
