Montessori Toddler Program | Mission Montessori
Our Montessori toddler program offers a warm, steady beginning for your little one during one of the most transformative periods of a child's development. Rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori's belief that "Education is not something which the teacher does, but a natural process that develops spontaneously in the human being," our Montessori toddler program embraces each child's natural drive to grow and discover. Supported by research from the American Montessori Society showing that toddlers thrive in environments that honor independence, movement, and emotional security, our Montessori classrooms offer younger children the freedom, guidance, and loving structure they need to grow with confidence. With Montessori-trained guides who understand this sensitive developmental stage, we ease many parents' worries by offering a predictable space where learning unfolds naturally, routines feel reassuring, and every small achievement is celebrated.

Snack, rest, toileting, and transitions follow routines designed to support toddlers' independence, comfort, safety, and consistency.
Classroom Experience
In our Montessori classroom, toddlers thrive in a peaceful, unhurried Montessori environment with individualized attention, consistent caregivers, and a rhythm that honors their emerging autonomy. Through soft communication, rich language modeling, and daily observations shared with parents, your toddler is supported, understood, and encouraged every step of the way.
About Our Montessori Toddler Program
Many parents wonder whether toddlers are ready for a school environment, and that is such a natural question in this tender season of raising children. At Mission Montessori, we follow Dr. Maria Montessori's understanding (backed today by AMI and AMS research) that younger children learn more between birth and age six than at almost any other time in life. Toddlers thrive when they feel safe, loved, and free to explore at their own pace, with warm guides, calm routines, and an environment designed precisely for this developmental stage. Our Montessori school for toddlers in San Francisco offers far more than child care, it offers a steady beginning where early growth and independence unfold naturally.
From 18 Months to 36 Months: Supporting Toddlers at Every Developmental Stage
Your toddler's world expands quickly, with new words, new movements, new feelings, and new expressions of independence. In our toddler program, children ages 18 months to 3 years are welcomed into a supportive, joyful Montessori classroom designed to match their natural drive to move, explore, communicate, and belong. Here, your child is guided with respect and encouragement as they begin to recognize their abilities and explore their growing sense of self.
Sensory Development
In our Montessori toddler program, toddlers explore carefully chosen materials that refine touch, sight, sound, and movement, which support eye-hand coordination, visual discrimination, and early problem solving. These experiences echo Dr. Maria Montessori's belief that the senses are a child's pathway to understanding the world.
Freedom of Movement & Gross Motor Skills
Toddlers practice climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling, pouring, and carrying in an environment that respects their need to move. Research from the American Montessori Society shows that physical coordination and early executive functioning grow best when children have the freedom to move in a safe, thoughtfully prepared environment, a hallmark of our Montessori classroom.
Fine Motor Development
Through activities like spooning, pouring, threading, opening/closing containers, and other Montessori activities, toddlers build the fine motor strength that supports writing, dressing, and practical life skills later on. These simple tasks nurture intrinsic motivation, focus, and the joy of accomplishment.
Early Language Foundations
Language flourishes in our toddler classroom. Our guides introduce new vocabulary through conversation, stories, songs, real objects, and respectful communication. This practice is supported by Montessori research showing that rich language modeling in early childhood predicts stronger literacy skills in preschoolers and older children.
Practical Life: Early Independence
From putting on their own shoes to wiping spills, washing their hands, setting the table, and helping care for their classroom, toddlers experience purposeful tasks that build self-expression, confidence, and independence. As Dr. Maria Montessori wrote, "Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed."
Emotional Security & Social Development
Toddlers build relationships through gentle interactions, turn-taking moments, and real conversations guided by adults who model empathy. Research shows that Montessori programs enhance social skills, emotional regulation, and community awareness, skills toddlers practice daily in our warm, consistent Montessori environment.
Cognitive Development & Problem-Solving
Through cause-and-effect materials, sequencing activities, sorting, matching, and open-ended exploration, toddlers strengthen their early reasoning and problem-solving skills. This aligns with Montessori studies showing that early independence and hands-on materials support later abstract thinking and real-world learning.
Peaceful Routines & Natural Rhythms
We honor each toddler's rhythm by offering predictable routines, calm transitions, and gentle caregiving moments. This consistency helps toddlers feel secure, regulated, and ready to explore, a big part of why many parents say their child's self-confidence blossoms here.
Exploration Through Safe, Prepared Environments
Our Montessori environment is designed specifically for toddlers: low shelves, soft rugs, real materials, child-sized tools, and places where your child can safely climb, carry, clean, create, and explore. Everything is intentional, accessible, and supports independence.

Very clean, organized and professional. My daughter has the very best at this school without a doubt. I love the structure. It’s design makes my daughter yearn to learn more and more each day. She is so proud of her accomplishments at her new school even though she’s only been there a few days. I already am noticing a difference at home and in her behavior in general. As a single mother this has already helped me immensely. I am excited to see her growth this year. We couldn’t have found a better school.
